Isnt there a reverse function already included in fb that can be activated by the appropriate setting in fb_settings.php?

Nothing Carlos, $reverse in fb_settings its for the main image, not for thumbs.

som1 earlier this year had a solution to this:
by naming images in chronological order (for example "001-image.jpg" or "099-image.jpg" you can use the sort alphabetical feature for this. (yeah i know: numbers arent part of the alphabet ;-) but php dont care :-P )
